British F-One driver Lewis Hamilton and Lionel Messi, one of the world's greatest footballers, were jointly voted Best Player of the Year at the Lares Sports Awards here. Both players received an equal number of votes. It was the first time in the 20-year history of these awards that jury members could not choose a winner from Hamilton and Messi. Messi is the first team-player to win FIFA's Best Player of the Year award six times. He, however, was not present to receive the award on Monday. Messi and Hamilton defeated Giants golfer Tiger Woods, marathon runner Elude Kipchoge of Kenya, tennis legend Rafael Nadal and Moto GP champion Mark Marquez to win the title. Biles won the best female player of the year award for the third time in the last four years.
He won five gold medals at the 2019 World Championships. Biles also achieved this title in 2017 and 2019. The award ceremony was hosted by actor Hugh Grant. American basketball veteran Kobe Bryant, who lost his life in a recent helicopter crash, was paid tribute at the event.
Snowboarding player Chloe Kim won the World Action Sports Award. He has won this title for the second time in this category. The South African team, which won the Rugby World title in 2019, won Lares Best Team of the Year for the second time. They won this title by beating Liverpool (Football Club) and the women's team of America in this race.
